A bit about me:
Having a family history of Ischemic Heart Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, and a plethora of other health conditions, I was all too aware of the absolute necessity to ensure that I did absolutely everything in my power not to succumb to familial health problems.
Unfortunately, in my first pregnancy, I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. It honestly felt like I had let myself down, it was a terrible experience, the constant hospital visits, the tests, the ongoing threat of something potentially going wrong with not only the pregnancy and delivery of my baby but the risk of my baby being born with Diabetes or both of us developing diabetes within the first 6 months of his birth.
Once the Postpartum stage was over and I was back on my feet, into a good routine, I did as much personal investigating as I could into the disease, and food and lifestyle was the answer.
My second pregnancy, the doctors literally jumped on to GDM straight away with blood tests to ensure baby number two and I were going to be ok. And we were. Why? Because of all the research I had done into the Glycaemic Index, how to stabilise blood sugars, what to eat, what not to eat, and when to eat. Hydration, exercise, stress, sleep all contribute. And once the Glucose Tolerance test came around, I smashed it out of the ball park!! I won!! I was not going to be another statistic to the horrid disease that is Diabetes Mellitus.
This only further fueled my desire to learn more about food, and nutrition, and how our bodies use it not only for energy, but also for healing, and how what we choose to put into our bodies reflects our state of health and our ability to reach the ultimate state of Homeostasis.
For almost 4 years I studied Nutritional Medicine at the Australasian College of Natural Therapies. My interests lean more to Endocrinology, Immunology and General Health and Wellbeing.
I know, from personal experience, how hard it can be. The unanswered questions, the “what happens now?” thought pattern. Sometimes we need direction and guidance, a step by step and a “how to” guide. At Nautical Nutrition, we will guide, educate and share the journey that is your chosen path to a better lifestyle and positive health outcomes.
